First, take a deep breath (you may need more than one) and remember you will survive the holidays. Second, your family and friends really do care about you and want you to be successful. So why not use this as a networking opportunity? Bring a couple of resumes and postage paid envelops with you, to either distribute or mail. Have you googled yourself lately? Has your family posted images or messages on the web that a potential employer could view? Remind them that employers do check the web when doing background checks and request that they remove/delete these items. Use the 'good old days' discussions as a means to identify experiences or awards that could enhance your resume as well as to locate people that could serve as a reference. This discussion could also help you identify your passion in life. Be prepared to ask probing questions when someone says they just landed their dream job. You are looking for the name/number of a contact person, where they found the job posting, other positions in the company, and specific questions raised during the interview. Why not have them take you through a mock interview?
If you are really feeling really bold, consider these ideas.
- Offer to help someone. By creating positive energy something good will happen to you.
- Suggest gifts that could aid you in your job search ie an adult education class, interview suit,
